This dress was inspired by a classic smocked bishop dress but we gave it a more up to date look. After sketching for a while we finally had a design we were pleased with.
Then the search for fabric began. We settled on a fine Swiss cotton sateen in a lovely shade of pink. Swiss cotton sateen is a beautiful costly material made in Switzerland. The Swiss are known for their luxurious cottons. This particular material, while soft like cotton, is brushed to a satiny shine. For a contrast fabric, we selected a fine cream colored linen. The two colors are just beautiful together!
Now that we had the fabric, it was time to start sewing. We cut a circular yoke, wide enough to extend into cap sleeves. The skirt was cut to fall from the yoke. We stitched the side seams using French seams, and hand bound the armholes with bias cut linen. Next, we put in the zipper. We love using invisible zippers in our doll clothes because of their neat look. For a nicer drape, we hemmed the dress by hand. Then it was time for trim. We used more bias cut linen and hand stitched it around the yoke. For the finishing touch, we made a tiny bow out of the linen and stitched it to the front of the dress.
We recommend this dress for birthday parties, picnics in the park, or just for when your doll feels like wearing something pretty!
