This dress was inspired by the song from The Sound of Music called My Favorite Things. In particular the line, “girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes.” After working on a sketch we had the perfect design. Simple, elegant, and classic.
woven from silk threads into a shimmery, bumpy, gorgeous material. For the sash we selected another of our favorite things: silk satin ribbon. Unlike commonly used polyester satin ribbon, silk sating ribbon is soft and has a fine drape when tied.
Then we began to sew. We stitched up the bodice using princess seams for a perfect fit. For the lining, we also used silk dupioni. To keep the lining from peeking out, we under-stitched it. Then is was time to finish the arm holes.
After a few tries we found the nicest look came from hand stitching the bodice to the lining. A simple, tea length, gathered skirt gave us the classic silhouette we wanted. After putting in the zipper it was time to hem. A hand hem gave the dress a beautiful drape. We hand crocheted belt loops to keep the sash in place, and, for the finishing touch, hand beaded the bodice with five Swarovski crystals. The perfect amount of sparkle!
We recommend this dress for Spring recitals, parties, or Easter Sunday.
