Empire Day Dress

Fashion in the Empire period was heavily influenced by the classic elegant look of ancient Rome. One of the most popular colors for woman’s gowns was white, so today we are featuring a basic white muslin day dress. We made it up in the basic style for this period: a high waist with short puffy sleeves. The high “empire” waist of the period was a trend started by Empress Josephine of France. We trimmed the sleeves with crocheted lace threaded with a pink silk ribbon.

For calls or going out in the afternoon, a popular piece of outerwear was the spencer jacket. This one is made of golden silk velvet. A perfect choice for a fashionable lady of this time.
